What's Your Function?

When I got home last night I looked out over my balcony and this is what I saw:

OK, so it's not the clearest picture in the world, but it does capture an interesting celestial event, the conjunction of the moon, Venus and Jupiter. Jupiter is, I believe, the very faint dot on the right side of the picture.

Here's a somewhat better, but a bit more blurry view of the astronomical threesome:

This kind of reminds me of the time a friend and I took a three-hour drive down south of Houston a couple of years ago, late in the evening and into the morning, to see closest conjunction of the Earth and Mars. Truth be told, while we expected to see craters and such on Mars through the telescope, the view was a bit underwhelming. Mars was just a really, really bright dot in the summer sky.

Still, it was pretty cool.
